Tom Black - Head Women's Coach at UC San Diego
In 2005, Black
took over as head coach for the UCSD women's volleyball program
and was able to build team chemistry with six new starters, leading
the team to victories over two ranked opponents as part of a 19-8
record on the season. UCSD had three players named to the all-CCAA
team and one student-athlete earned AVCA Pacific Region honors.
Black
came to UCSD after spending two seasons as an assistant coach for
the men’s volleyball program at USC. Prior to his stint with the
Trojans he spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons as the men's head coach
at Pierce Junior
College in Woodland Hills, Calif.
He also was an assistant in 2003 with the Pierce women's team. His
men's squads won the 2002 and 2003 California
state junior college crowns, finishing 15-3 in 2002 and 17-2 in
2003.
Black began his coaching career as an assistant boys' coach
at Royal High in Simi Valley, Calif.,
for two seasons (1997-98). The 1997 Royal team was a CIF Division
I finalist. He then spent three years (1999-2001) as the head boys'
coach at Thousand Oaks (Calif.)
High, where he also taught English and history.
He also served as the co-director of the Santa Monica Beach
Club team for the last four years. He was the head coach of SMBC's
boys' 18s team in 2003, 2004 and 2005 after serving as an assistant
in 2002 with the 18s team that won the bronze medal at the Junior
Olympics. He also is the head coach of SMBC's girls' 17s team in 2005.
Black is no stranger to the La Jolla campus as he was a four-year
(1993-96) varsity letterman for the Tritons’ men’s volleyball program,
setting numerous hitting records and earning All-MPSF honorable
mention notice as a senior in 1996. He also was Volleyball magazine's
Small College Player of the Year in 1996 while also earning Small
College All-America honors that same year.
He received his bachelor's degree in political science from
UCSD in 1996. A California native, Black prepped at Crespi
High in Encino,
Calif., where he made the All-CIF third team
as a 1991 senior.
Bobbie Estes - Head coach girls volleyball Saugus High
School
Bobbie
has 25 years of volleyball coaching experience. She is currently
a World History and AP Geography teacher at Saugus High School.
As head coach of the girls' program at Saugus for 13 years, Bobbie
led her teams to three league championships and to 10 CIF palyoff
berths, including one trip to CIF-SS Divsion II finals. Prior to
Saugus, she taught and coached at La Canada High School, where she
led her teams to six league titles in 10 years. She is currently
on the CIF Volleyball Advisory Board. Her three childrenplay both
in high school and college. Her eldest daughter was a three-time
All-CIF player, and went to Georgetown Univesrity on a volleyball
scholarship. Bobbie just completed her first year coaching a developmental
team for SMBC and runs several youth summer volleyball camps for
the City of Santa Clarita
Sabrina Hernandez - Setter's Coach UC Irvine
Sabrina
Hernandez is in her third season with the women’s program and serves
as the recruiting coordinator. The Long Beach Hall of Fame honoree
will also work with the setters this season as well as continue
to handle the team’s defense.
The
Long Beach State graduate had a storied career as
a setter for the 49ers. She was a 1991 and 1992 AVCA All-American
first-team selection and over her four-year career (1989-92), she
garnered two AVCA All-Region honors and was a two-time All-Big West
selection. As a senior, Volleyball Magazine selected her to the
All-American first team, having named her an All-American honorable
mention the previous year. She ranks third all-time at Long Beach State with 4,796 career assists and eighth
with 115 career aces. Hernandez was inducted into Long Beach State’s
Hall of Fame in 2003.
Hernandez graduated in 1994 with a degree in history and was
a special education teacher for two years prior to joining the UC
Irvine staff. She also was an assistant coach at Oregon
State from 1999-2001.
She currently resides in Signal Hill with her husband, Josh,
and their cat, Maddux.
Kaili Kimura - Pro Beach Player and former All-American
at CSULA
Kaili
is in her sixth season of pro-beach volleyball.
In her first season of the BVA Tour, Kaili
finished 17th in five of the seven tour stops with Sarah
Schroeder. She played her
collegiate volleyball at Cal-State, Los
Angeles. In her senior season there, she earned MVP,
Exceptional Female Student- Athlete, and Academic All-American Honors. She was also named to the All-Conference and
All-Regional teams as well during her collegiate career. Cal-State LA made it to the final four in her
first year and to the “sweet 16” her last three years. Kaili graduated in
1997 with a B.S. degree in International Business, with a minor
in Economics. She is a certified
high school and college volleyball and basketball official. She was honored along with four Olympians, by
the LA84 Foundation (formerly AAF), with the Spirit Award for her
exceptional and inspirational contributions to the development of
future Olympic Athletes by coaching theory and skills to at-risk
youngsters in the sport of beach volleyball.
Kyle Kvasnicka - Assistant Coach Concordia University
Coach Kyle Kvasnicka returns to Concordia University
for his third season as an assistant coach with the Eagle volleyball
program. Kvasnicka came to the Eagles with an extensive and impressive
coaching background, most recently as a club volleyball coach and
director.
In
the summer of 2005, he was the head coach for the Southern California
High Performance Regional Team that competed in Austin,
Texas. He coached the
U15 and U17 teams for Team Complete Athlete of Long Beach, guiding
the 15s team to a 5th place finish in the National Division of the
Junior Olympics and the 17s team to a 13th place finish in the American
Division.
Before
that he was directing the Challengers Volleyball Club from 2001
to 2004 in Nebraska, where he led
the U17 team to a #1 ranking in the nation and an eventual second-place
finish at the Junior Olympics in the National Division. In 2003, he led his U16 team to a 5th place
finish at the Junior Olympics in the 16 Open Division, upsetting
Nationally #1 ranked Sports Performance in the process and finished
the year ranked 7th in the Nation.
In 2002, his U15 team qualified for the Junior Olympics in
the Open Division, finishing in 21st place.
During
his four years at Challengers, Kvasnicka
coached four Junior Olympic All-Americans and won four Great Plains
Regional Championships. Prior to Challengers, Kvasnicka
coached one year for the Central Ohio Volleyball Club in Columbus, Ohio
and three years for the Titan Challengers Volleyball Club. Kvasnicka has also
been involved with the USA Volleyball High Performance Programs
the past two seasons.
Kvasnicka
completed his degree in business administration at the University
of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2004.
Nabil Mardini - Women's Head Coach Pierce College and
Director of Santa Monica Beach Club
Nabil Mardini is in his 8th season as the head coach at Pierce College
for the Women’s Volleyball Program.
In only two seasons, he turned the program around by taking
the Brahmas from last place in the conference to its first conference
title (2001) since 1980. In 2003, his team made history at Pierce College
by going 16-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference and clinched the
Western State Conference Championship for the third straight year
and finished the season ranked 8th in the State of California.
Once again this past 2004 season, his team reached another milestone
by going 18-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference and clinched the
Western State Conference Championship for the fourth straight year.
The Brahmas made it to the Elite Eight Tournament for the first
time in the program history and finished the season ranked 5th
in the State of California. He was named his conference Coach
of the Year in 2002, 2004, 2006, and 2007.
Mardini
coached the WSC Player of the Year in 2001, 2002, and 2004 as well
as many First Team All-Conference award winners. He was also named
the 2001 and 2004 Western State Conference (South) Coach of the
Year.
Nabil has
been the director of Santa Monica Beach Club for the past eight
years for both the boys and the girls programs. He is credited as
the driving force behind the recent rise of SMBC as a regional and
national club volleyball powerhouse. Under his leadership more than
eighty SMBC athletes have gone on to play collegiate volleyball,
the vast majority on scholarship of some kind. During his tenure,
he has revolutionized the SMBC training systems and is responsible
for the institution of swing blocking and quick-tempo offensive
systems at top age levels.
As
coach of SMBC's top 18 and under team,
he has guided the squad to four Top Ten finishes at the Volleyball
Festival in Reno in five years. In 2006, the SMBC 18-1's
finished fourth in the ultra-competitive and nationally regarded
powerhouse SCVA 18's Overall Standings (out of 173 teams), by far
the best finish of any area club that season. His gutsy 2007 squad
knocked-off several high seeds en route to a 10th place finish at
the Festival. Most recently, his SMBC 18-1’s team finished 4th at
the Volleyball Festival in Reno.
Prior
to coming to the United
States, Nabil
had a very successful career being a member of his hometown semi-professional
club team, “Club Relevement Social Knat”.
He was selected to play for the Junior National Team of Lebanon
at the age of 15.
In
the United States, Nabil
played two years for Santa
Monica College.
In 1996, he was voted MVP and “Athlete of the Year” for Santa Monica College
while leading the state in kills.
Janet Olsen - ATC at Irvine Valley College
Janet holds a BS
in Athletic Training from CSU Sacramento and teaching credentials
in Physical Education and Biology.
Her 12 years experience in an outpatient orthopedic physical
therapy clinic, led to her current position as the Head Certified
Athletic Trainer at Irvine Valley
College where
she is a faculty member for the Sports Medicine and Fitness Certificate
programs since 1990. Janet was drawn to sports medicine during her
10 years as a competitive club and collegiate gymnast.
She served as Staff Athletic Trainer at the 2003 World Gymnastics
Championships and 2004 U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials.
Tom Pestolesi - Head Coach Irvine Valley College
Tom Pestolesi played at Huntington Beach High School
and earned All-CIF honors, graduating in 1978.
He played two years at Cal-State Long Beach, from 1979 -
1980, and two years at the University of Hawaii,
1982 - 1983, being selected All-American both years. Tom was a Junior National Team member in 1979,
and competed in the World University Games in 1981. He is an 8-time USA Volleyball All-American
Team member. From 1984 -
1993, Tom was the Head Volleyball Coach at Estancia High School
during which time he was selected as "Orange County Coach of
the Year". From 1993 - 1997 he coached the Girls Volleyball
Team at Newport Harbor High, leading the team to become CIF Division
Champions in 1994 & 1997, and State Champions in 1994.
He served
as the Head Men’s Volleyball Coach at Irvine Valley
College from
1991 - 1994; then again from 1999 - present.
In 1993, Tom was selected "Coach of the Year,"
as his team became State Champions.
He became the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at IVC in 1998.
Additionally, he served at Head Coach of the "Sony Autosound Professional Fours Beach Tour Team from 1995 - 1997.
Tom currently serves as Professor of Physical Education at
Irvine
Valley College
and Head Men’s and Women’s Volleyball Coach.
His children are among the best junior volleyball players
in Orange County.
His son playing for Cal State Long Beach and his
daughter who is one of the top players at UC Irvine.
